Paying for college is not easy, so every little bit can help. Here are five options available to members of the Mid-America Carpenters Regional Council.
APPLICATION DEADLINE IS FEBRUARY 18, 2023
The Construction Industry Services Corporation (CISCO) has two scholarship programs available.
Provides financial support to college-bound children of building trade union members and employees of union contractors. Four $2,000 scholarships will be awarded each year to children of a member of a trade union affiliated with CISCO or to children of non-bargaining unit employees of a union contractor affiliated with CISCO.
Provides financial support for CISCO members who are working in the trades or are employees of CISCO contractors who are enrolled in an undergraduate degree program at a community college or a four-year accredited college or university. Two $1,000 scholarships will be awarded each year.

William A. Lee Memorial Scholarship
APPLICATION DEADLINE IS JANUARY 31, 2023
Each year, the Chicago Federation of Labor awards 10 William A. Lee Memorial Scholarships to high school seniors, five to the winners of the Academic Competition, and five to the winners of the Random Drawing. The scholarships, valued at $2,000 each, may be used at any accredited college or university in the United States.
History of the Scholarship
The Chicago Federation of Labor renamed the scholarship in 1985 to honor Mr. Lee, the CFL’s longest-serving president. Mr. Lee devoted over 60 years to the cause of labor and civic and community service, with 38 of those years at the CFL.
- The applicant must be a senior in high school and graduate in the spring.
- Either the applicant or the applicant’s parent must be a member in good standing of a CFL-affiliated union. To confirm a union’s affiliation status, please call 312.222.1000.
- The applicant must choose to enter either the Academic Competition or Random Drawing for the William A. Lee Memorial Scholarship. Students are not eligible to enter both categories.
- Applicants attempting to enter both categories will be disqualified from both categories.
George Vest Jr. – Richard S. Pepper Scholarship
APPLICATION DEADLINE IS JULY 1, 2023
Provides financial support to college-bound children of members of local unions affiliated with the Mid-America Carpenters Regional Council.

Applications for the $1,000 scholarships are accepted beginning in April each year.
Local 1027 Betterment of Education Scholarship
APPLICATION DEADLINE IS MAY 31, 2024
BETTERMENT OF EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP will award $500.00 scholarships to children, grandchildren, and/or stepchildren of any member who does not owe any assessments and is in good standing with the United Brotherhood of Carpenters Local 1027. The Trustees will determine the number of scholarships awarded. The Scholarship Awards will be available for use at any College, University, or Vocational Training Institution in the United States.
Any 2021-2024 high school graduates who have received a High School Diploma or GED equivalent, can provide proof of enrollment in a College, University, or Vocational Training Institution, and further provides that he or she is the Child, Grandchild, and/or Stepchild of a member in good standing with the United Brotherhood of Carpenters Local 1027.
The Scholarships are entirely unrestricted as to Race, Religion, Political Affiliation, or choice of College, University, or Vocational Training Institution.
